FIRST steps have been taken towards forming a southern Italian processing tomato district that brings together representatives from across the supply chain, the agricultural association, Cia, announced on 22 March. "The meeting held yesterday, with all the agricultural representatives (professional agricultural associations, national product unions and producer organisations) and the majority of industrial representatives (Anicav) present, has begun to set up the District's constitution, through an initial promotion committee which will fix its duties and objectives," Cia said in a statement. The group expressed "great satisfaction" over the results of the meeting. The district will be open to all operators in the sector from five regions: Apulia, Campania, Basilicata, Molise and Calabria. It will provide an environment within which operators in the sector will be able to share experiences and conduct negotiations over framework contracts.
