THE first British asparagus of the season has gone on sale at a UK supermarket. This early UK-grown asparagus, available in the Waitrose Foodhall at John Lewis stores in both Oxford Street and Bluewater, will be the first UK-grown crop to be sold this year. The super-early asparagus has been grown by Michael Porter in Worcestershire, who is part of a group of British farmers supplying Waitrose. The glasshouse system protects the asparagus during the colder months, while growth is slower. In late December the fern is cut off and covered the soil in fleece to increase the speed of growth.
