New pistachio factoryThis article was originally published in Foodnews
ARGENTINE pistachio firm Polo Pistachero San Juan, comprised of Argentine and Italian companies, has opened a new processing plant in 25 de Mayo. The plant is expected to process 2 000kg per hour with a storage capacity of 130 000kg of dried pistachio. The area is said to be perfect for growing the nut, combining sunny and hot days with cool nights, in addition to a good water supply. Pistachio plantations in the southern hemisphere are often attractive for foreign investors, since the harvest does not clash with that of the northern hemisphere and production costs are relatively low. It is also important to note that Argentine pistachios appear to suffer from fewer diseases than those in the northern hemisphere, so pesticide costs are reduced.
