Bumper crop for Wattie's

This article was originally published in Foodnews

NEW ZEALAND vegetable processor, Wattie's, has said it expects to process 40 000 tonnes of tomato this season, its largest harvest for several years. Ivan Angland, the company's agricultural manager in North Island, said the crop has benefited from an excellent growing season so far. "Tomatoes are the company's single biggest crop, used in more than 200 product lines ranging from tomato sauce and baked beans to pesto style and Indian tomatoes." The crop, which is grown on 450 hectares across Hawke's Bay, consists of a proprietary variety of tomato bred for disease resistance, peelability, fruit quality and yield. Wattie's, which is owned by processed food giant, Heinz, produces frozen and packaged fruit and vegetables as well as other prepared foods.
