More tomato paste for Cuba

This article was originally published in Foodnews

TOMATO harvesting in the valley of Caujerí, Cuba is said to be going well with 1 961 tonnes collected already, according to radioguantanamo.cu. During the current harvest, which will continue up to April, some 5 700 tonnes is expected to be collected, with around 3 000 tonnes destined for the fresh market. The Guaso vegetable canning factory, La Unidad Empresarial de Base Conservas y Vegetales Guaso, has contracted the remaining amount for processing to produce 450 tonnes of tomato purée. The use of improved tomato varieties that are more productive has resulted in producers obtaining better yields than the 17 tonnes per hectare previously estimated. The tomato crop has suffered, however, from adverse weather conditions during January which led to some incidences of blight.
