Belgian pears sold in ChinaThis article was originally published in Foodnews
Belgium delivered its first Conference pears to the Chinese market at the end of January. The auction house Belgische Fruitveiling (BFV) hopes to export between 5 000-10 000 tonnes to China eventually, some 10% of its production. BFV claims this is the first foreign pear variety to be sold in China. It is priced at CNY3.50-4.00 per pear (USD0.53-0.61), compared with CNY2.50 (USD0.38) for domestic pears. However, market research indicates that the higher price will not be a problem because Chinese pears have a higher water content and less flavour, Vilt reports.
