Canned mackerel recall

This article was originally published in Foodnews

SOUTH AFRICAN firm Oceana Brands has announced a nationwide recall of all 400g cans of Lucky Star mackerel in tomato sauce after faulty cans which could lead to contamination were found. "This problem does not affect any other Lucky Star products," the company said in a statement. "Although the problem is confined to only one batch of mackerel cans, Oceana is removing all 400g cans of mackerel in tomato sauce from distribution nationwide as a safety precaution". To date there were no reports of anyone falling ill thus far but the company cautioned the public not to consume the products. Oceana said reports by independent experts confirmed that internal corrosion in the affected cans created pinholes in the tin. "The product passed all the necessary quality control tests and this was, unfortunately, a defective batch of lacquered tinplate," it said.
