Higher soft drinks tax

This article was originally published in Foodnews

LATVIA's parliament has approved amendments to the country's excise duties, and raised the tax rate on artificially sweetened beverages to LVL5.20 (USD9.64) per 100 litres from its present rate of LVL4.00/100 litres. Environmental and farming lobbyists had wanted a lower rate of LVL/100 litres. The new tax will be applied to flavoured or sweetened non-carbonated bottled water or mineral water, and all other non-alcoholic beverages, except fruit/vegetable juices, nectars and natural spring or mineral water.
