Tomato paste boost

This article was originally published in Foodnews

SOARING fresh tomato prices in Israel have pushed consumers to turn to processed tomato, a representative of an Israeli canned foods manufacturer toldFOODNEWS at SIAL. The manufacturer said that consumers turned to tomato paste and other derivatives as they were a cheaper option. Arutz Sheva news agency reported that though the average price of fresh tomato is normally less than ILS2.50 per kg, they are now ILS14.00 and upward per kg. The jump in price was attributed to a shortage of domestic tomato caused by late summer heatwaves.
