Asparagus production drop

This article was originally published in Foodnews

US CANNED asparagus production is forecast to drop to just 3 100 (short) tons in 2010, a drop of 39% when compared with 5 100 tons in 2009, according to the USDA. Around 7 100 tons were produced in 2008. The fall in production is largely due to an 18% reduction in overall output of the vegetable, while the processed production volume is down 39% to 6 000 tonnes. Prices for canning asparagus paid by processors increased this year to USD1 430 per ton, from USD1 360/ton in 2009 and USD 1 350/ton in 2008.
