GROWERS in the Yakima Valley region of Washington state are reporting that they expect a significant reduction in the volume of canning pears produced this year. The area mainly produces the Bartlett pear variety that supplies the three canneries in the valley but local media reports have quoted producers estimating a 10-15% drop in output this year due to a cool spring. Washington and Oregon are predicted to produce a combined 125 000 short tons of Bartlett pears this year.
