This article was originally published in Foodnews

ACCORDING to new figures from Statistics Denmark, more and more Danish consumers are purchasing organic wine and beer. Scott LaHart writes: The Statistics Denmark numbers show that sales of organic wine, beer and cider have risen by a full 35% from 2008 to 2009." This is a product group that has grown enormously in relation to the overall growth of organic products, which was five% last year," said Kirsten Lund Jensen, organic branch head in the Danish Agriculture and Food Council. Danish supermarket Irma has marked the growing demand for organic wines. "Fifteen years ago we only had a single organic wine in the shop. Today, 30 out of our total portfolio of over 300 wines are organic. Organic wine represents 7.5% of our total wine sales," said Irma product planner, Soren Gronbaek.
