Metro sustainable policy

This article was originally published in Foodnews

CANADIAN retailer Metro Inc has announced a policy to offer seafood sourced only from sustainable fisheries. The policy, which will apply to fresh and frozen wild and farmed seafood products, should be in effect in all its stores across Quebec and Ontario by June 2011. Starting in September 2010, Metro will stop selling a number of threatened species and will change its product labelling to raise customer awareness. It will also train store employees to answer customers' questions on sustainable fisheries products. Metro says it has developed a "balanced" policy on fisheries, which "first takes into account official scientific opinions, but also the points of view of all stakeholders, including governments, NGOs and suppliers".
