SOUTH African companies are resorting to air freighting fresh avocados, to avoid supplies being blocked by the Transnet dock workers' strike in the country. The freight costs are ZAR50 per carton (USD6.28/carton), five times higher than the sea freight cost, reports local press, and the costs are being shared between producers and customers. Growers in the country are worried about competition from Peru and elsewhere.
