Chilean fish exports slump despite high prices

CHILE exported a total of 528 000 tonnes of fishery and aquaculture products in the first half of 2010, some 37% less than the previous year's total of 832 500 tonnes. However, thanks to an average price rise of 37% - driven by salmon, trout and fishmeal - the value was only 13% lower than the same period of 2009, at USD1.76 billion, and the shortfall compared with last year is declining as the year progresses, according to the Chilean Subsecretariat for Fisheries.
