Strong Japanese yen fuels rise in food imports

JAPAN's food processing and retail industry has remained strong despite the 11 March 2011 earthquake and Fukashima incident, with both experiencing real growth in the past year. In response to the disaster, Japanese consumers have started to eat more at home and place greater value in shelf-life and more trust in imports. Perhaps the greatest influence on the Japanese food industry, however, has been the strength of the Japanese yen, thanks to its safe haven status since the global financial crisis.
