Government steps in to pay Tanzanian cashew farmers

THE Tanzanian government has started paying farmers for cashew nuts delivered to co-operatives through an export guarantee scheme from the Bank of Tanzania (BOT) after some 85 000 tonnes of cashew nuts failed to be marketed. This left the industry, which provides 5% of GDP, at risk of collapse.
