US rice largely genetically modified organism-free

US testing of this year's long-grain rice crop has shown it to be largely free of contamination by genetically modified rice, according to the USA Rice Federation. Analysis of 608 samples submitted voluntarily to the Federation from five states showed that all but 0.5% tested negative for Bayer CropScience's glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink rice. A lengthy investigation by the USDA into the contamination of rice crops by two of Bayer's GM rice lines proved inconclusive (Agrow No 530, p 15).
