Argentines develop mosquito bio-insecticide:
A new bio-insecticide for the control of mosquitoes that "is a price and quality competitive alternative" to established products has been developed in Argentina. Researchers from the microbiological and agricultural zoology institute, part of the Argentine national agricultural technology institute (INTA), aimed to develop a bio-insecticide based on the "recognised effectiveness" of Bt var israelensis. They developed liquid concentrate (LC) and wettable powder formulations. In simulated field trials, the LC achieved 88% mortality of target pests by 30 days and 96% (40 days) in sun-exposed conditions. An established product caused 70% and 92% mortality. Under shaded conditions, both formulations of the bio-insecticide achieved over 97% control.
