EU Ministers progress on organic proposal

EU Agriculture Ministers say that they have made significant progress towards agreement on the proposed revision of EU rules on organic crop production, but that there are still issues that need further discussion. There has been a race to reach a compromise deal after widespread criticism of the proposals lead the European Commission to say that it would withdraw them if no agreement was reached by June. At the Ministers’ meeting in May, some member states called for more time to consider “sensitive” issues such as controls and the presence of non-authorised substances, which include pesticide residues, in organic products.
