South Africa opens GM centre

South Africa has opened its first research centre to work on improved molecular diagnostic disease markers. The Centre for Proteomic and Genomic Research will examine markers of pathogen resistance in maize as well as possible health risks linked to genetically modified plants. The facilities are to boost Southern Africa's biotechnology sector by supporting research, raise the number of scientists involved and strengthen the sector's infrastructure, says the country's Minister of Science and Technology, Mosibudi Mangena, according to the government information service. The new centre is based at the University of Cape Town campus.
