UK PM reiterates concern over 91/414 revision

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has reiterated his concern over the proposed revision of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414). Replying to a letter written by UK Crop Protection Association’s (CPA) chief executive Dominic Dyer, Mr Brown stated that the approach taken to regulate pesticides goes well beyond the risk-based approach that is advised by the UK’s scientific establishment. He failed to see sense in a measure which could reduce yields of key crops by 20-30% and for which there is “not even a half-robust impact assessment”. The UK Pesticides Safety Directorate has recently come out with a revised impact assessment, which says that 14-23% of ais could be lost if the proposals were adopted ( Agrow No 558, p 10).
